Precise language allows you to control the tone of your review. This novel is a magical story that reveals the essence of life, love and loneliness. Is the author refuting earlier works, building on another author's ideas or rehashing an earlier piece of work?
Try to present a balanced argument about the value of the book for its audience. Some basic biographical information about the author s or editor s of the book you are reviewing is necessary. Graduate students who are told that they should not waste their time reviewing books are being taught, implicitly, to reckon their time solely in terms of individual profit and loss.

As you read, make sure that you take down notes. These are a quick way to get an overview of the book from the author's point of view. Does the author cover all aspects of the subject in a balanced fashion? But you can introduce your review differently depending on the argument and audience.
